If you read my Healthy or Haux post, you already know how I feel about product labeling: Good for the companies pockets…not so good for our health!
A perfectly good example what I mean by this would be breakfast cereals.
For most people, cereals are a great way to start their morning or a perfect snack throughout the day. Whatever the case, I’m sure plenty of you include cereal somewhere in your week. So what’s so bad about cereal? Nothing! That is if you’re picking the right ones!
Remember my recent post about GMOs? (if you don’t, read it here!) Knowing how bad GMOs are, it’s pretty alarming to hear that most “natural” breakfast cereals contain high levels of these genetically enginered ingredients! Yikes!
The Cornucopia Institute’s did a study and revealed some scary facts!
• Kashi Cereals: Contain high levels of GMOs and 100% of the soy used was genetically engineered soy.
• Mother’s Brand Cereal’s: Contain high levels of GMOs. Tests revealed 28% of the corn to be genetically engineered.
• Whole Foods’ 365 brand Corn Flakes: Contains high levels of GMOs (more than 50% genetically engineered corn)
• Barbara’s Bakery Puffins cereal: Also shown to contain more than 50% genetically engineered corn.
• Kashi GoLean, Mother’s Bumpers, Nutritious Living Hi-Lo, and General Mills Kix: All considered “natural” and are also contaminated with high levels of GE ingredients (sometimes as high as 100%)
• Quaker Oats: Claims to be an “all-natural” product, but Quaker Oats (a unit of PepsiCo) manages a processing plant that emits roughly 19,000 pounds of sulfuryl fluoride yearly. (Sulfuryl fluoride is a toxic greenhouse gas used to treat crops like oats in storage.)
• Mom’s Best Naturals Raisin Bran Cereal: contains “natural” (non-GMO) ingredients that are commonly contaminated with malathion and phosmet chemicals, both of which are neurotoxins.
What’s a neuortoxin? Neurotoxins are poisons that cause harm to our nerve cells and nervous system.
• Bear Naked and Kashi: Several products from these compaines contain conventional soy protein.
So as you an tell, some of the so called “healthy” products contain some surprisingly unhealthy ingredients! Be careful with what you put into your body! Do your research :) And remember…just because something is labeled natural, does not necessarily make it healthy!

Considering that 80% of foods in U.S. grocery stores are made with GMO ingredients, it’s important that you learn about them.
GMO stands for genetically modified organism. Sounds like a science experiment right? That’s because it basically is! Scientists have found that by using genetic engineering they can alter the genetic code of a fruit, vegetable, grain, anything! So basically they can create a fruit that has a longer “shelf life” or a vegetable that creates its own pesticides. Get the idea?
Well my first question when I read about this was:
Why are scientists working on our food?
Leave that to the farmers! I want my food to be clean and pure, not injected and altered!
You also have to realize that GMOs haven’t been proven safe. Millions of people are consuming products that haven’t even been investigated enough. And to make matters worse, there is no law stating that products have to label if they contain GMOs. According to LabelGMOs.org, studies show that these foods can create new, unintended toxic substances, increased allergies, cancer risks, and other health problems.
GMOs need to be avoided and we deserve to know what we’re putting in our bodies.
Sounds exciting! What is it?
Free radicals are defined as “an uncharged molecule having an unpaired valence electron…blah blah blah, sounds boring and sciencey right?
Well you should know about them! Because these free radicals are uneven, they’re always searching for an extra electron to steal so they can become stable…which is where you come in! And this boring process can become dangerous when in the body and possibly cause wrinkles, cataracts, cancer, many diseases, and so on.
Eww right? Now you’re probably interested because you want to know how to avoid them!
Bad news…you can’t.
There is no way to avoid free radicals because like I said above, they’re everywhere! They form from everyday things like
- sun exposure
- air pollution
So now you see that avoiding these are far from possible
unless you live in a bubble.
Antioxidants can help! They basically stop the free radical from causing any damage! Yay! Fresh fruits and veggies are awesome sources of antioxidants and are a lot better than taking an antioxidant supplement because they body has an easier time absorbing them! So just like everyone always tells you, eat your fruits and veggies!
As a baby we drink our mom’s milk.
Would you drink your mom’s milk now? No…ew.
Would you drink a random person’s breast milk? No, eww again
Would you drink an animal’s breast milk? No
See where I’m going with this…?
Would you drink a cow’s breast milk?
Newsflash! You probably do. I know I do! I eat dairy and I love it! However, now I know I no longer want to. Forks over Knives, The China Study, and lots of handy research thanks to the world wide web, have opened my eyes to the truth about Dairy.
Cow’s milk contains a protein called Casein. Research shows that this portein, Casein, may be one of the most potent chemical carcinogens. Chemical carcino-whaat? Chemical carcinogens are basically just cancer causing chemicals. That’s not the only bad thing about milk either. It’s also been linked to:
- Increased Risk for Cancer
- Juvenile Diabetes
- Multiple Sclerosis
And if that’s not enough, it also contains casomorphins which are addictive and make giving up dairy a challenge. Doesn’t sound so amazing anymore, does it?
…But wait I thought we needed dairy for the calcium?
False! We actually have no need for cow’s milk. Plus, with all the negatives, the positives seem pretty minimal.
That being said, I am still not a vegan or completely dairy free. However, I can promise you that I will be doing what I can to limit my diary intake from this point forward!
I’m not positve if that title is gramatically correct, but it looked and sounded good so just go with it!
So when you’re in a grocery store you have to understand the laws on food labeling are good for the companies pockets, but not so good for us. So by something saying “Real Fruit Juice” or “100 calories” does not necarsily mean all the ingredients are good for you. When you see something you are interested in buying, automatically turn to the side with the nutrition label. Educate yourself about what is in your food. You’ll come to find that some of your processed snacks sound more like a science experiment made in a lab…yuck. A way to get started with reading labels and learning about ingredients is by downloading this helpful app! I recently heard about it from Matchstick Molly (who I reccomend you all go follow by clicking the handy link I attatched.) It’s a iPhone/Android app called Fooducate (another link!) A team of parents, dieticians, and techies created to help people like us make better choices about what we eat! Sounds great right? Guess what…it’s free! All you do is scan the barcode of the product and see what’s really inside. It’s a real eye opener!
